Ruby E. Landreth, 97, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at Medical Lodge Post Acute Care Center in Kansas City, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 23rd, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 34th Street and Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, KS. Friends may call from 10 A.M. until Mass Time at the church. The family requests that any contributions be made to The Ronald McDonald House or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Ruby was born March 11, 1913 in Summum, IL to James P. and Molly (Harmon) Smith, and she had lived in the Kansas City Area all of her adult life. She was a seamstress for over 40 years, working at Edward Keith Drapery until she retired in 1990. Ruby taught herself to sew and loved doing it, often making clothing for herself, her kids and grandkids, even making their Halloween Costumes. She also loved being around her family and watching her grandchildren. She was a member of Our Lady of Unity Parish at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The last surviving member of her family, Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Survivors include her son, Norman E. Landreth; 2 daughters, Judy Hathaway and Janice Harmon and her husband Bill, all of Kansas City, KS; 2 grandchildren, Julie Hathaway and Michael Harmon; as well as many other loving nieces, nephews and family members who will miss her dearly.
Ruby had an immense love of life, family, children and all kinds of gambling. She enjoyed going to the casinos and was hard to beat in a game of Pitch because of her fearless bidding. With little formal education, she balanced the responsibilities of raising children, running a household and working full time. She loved unconditionally, charmed people with her wit and was admired for her many successful attempts to regain lost strength through determination and will, so she could remain independent enough to care for herself as long as possible. Although her life wasn't always easy, she never complained and faced each day with a smile, just happy to be alive. She lived her last years at Medical Lodge where she had many friends and was cared for by a loving and dedicated staff. She will be remembered and missed by everyone who came to know and love her.
Condolences may be left at www.chapelhill-butler.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street in Kansas City, KS, (913) 334-3366.
