

Valdine “Val” P. (Spiker) Smith, 94, of Kansas City, KS, passed away August 13, 2014 from a long illness. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 16th from 10-11 AM with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11AM at Christ the King, 3027 N. 54th St., Kansas City, KS 66104. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in Val’s name to Sister Servants of Mary, Attn: Planned Giving Department, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Val was born December 9, 1919 to the late Bernard J and Anna (Jachim) Spiker in Cook County, IL. She was an accomplished seamstress and artist. Her many talents will be missed by her family. While being a mother and housewife, she worked part-time for Olin Wilson Photography Studio helping the seniors of various high schools with getting ready for their graduation portraits. Her love of cards enabled her to be a member of many bridge clubs.
Before getting married, she worked many years for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. She met Jack in Kalamazoo, Michigan at a USO dance. Their love of dancing continued for the rest of their 67 married years.
She was a member of Christ the King Church for 60 years and a woman whose faith had a deep meaning and which she lived until the end. She was a member of the Merry Etta Club for over 50 years.
Val was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jack Smith. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Theresa A Henry and her husband Derral of KCK; son, Jack Smith and his wife, Karen of Topeka, KS; two grandsons, Brian Henry and wife Helen of Brooklyn, NY and Jeffrey Smith of Springfield, MO; two granddaughters, Theresa Byers and husband Adam of KCK and Melissa Smith of Overland Park, KS; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Providence Place and to Sacred Heart Hospice who took such good card of Valdine during her illness.
