We remember Vicki as a beloved daughter, sister, child of God, wife, mother, aunt (Mookie), grandma (Mickey), and friend. She was a musician, creative educator, entertainer, and Scout leader. She was generous in spirit and life, witty, wise, funny, and a joy to be with. She had a sweet and compassionate heart. She always had a kind, but honest, word for those around her. She was a victorious bundle of gifts from God to those who knew her.
Born March 23, 1952, the third child of Ernest Junior Vogler and Margery L. (Stewart) Vogler in Saint Louis, Missouri. Her childhood was surrounded with love and mischief by the whole Vogler clan in the Saint Louis area, particularly by her older brother Chris and younger sister Connie. Raised in Catholic schools near the Vogler “neighborhood” and out on the “farm,” she was exposed to humor, intellect, and the hardworking values of her parents. 4-H, Scouting, school productions and plays were also foundational in her childhood.
In college, at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO, Vicki’s religious upbringing led her to a campus Bible study. In 1972, she committed her life to Jesus, which changed the course of her life for eternity. While managing a Bible bookstore in town she met her future husband, John Wesley Auld. They were married on August 26, 1973 and moved to Olathe, KS, where they had their two sons, Peter-John in 1975 and Judah Matthew in 1976.
Living around the Olathe area and a little stint in Cheyenne, Vicki always loved working and playing with children, in part, because she was such a big kid at heart. She once led an ad hoc “Origami Class” at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art because the children around her were bored. Vicki was incredibly creative. There’s not enough space to list all the skills and crafts she did throughout the years. She was also a Disneyphile (someone who loves all things Disney), exemplified by her dumpster diving for treasures on a behind-the-scenes private tour of the Disney Studio grounds.
Over the years, she offered daycare, volunteered at Sunday School, worked in the Olathe School system, and finished her career as the Parent Involvement Coordinator for Head Start. Vicki was involved in Cub and Boy Scouts (eventually being honored as a Wood Badge Leader). She performed and worked at Renaissance festivals in Kansas and Oklahoma as “Old Sage,” the humorous Gypsy Queen.
Vicki and John saw their love for each other tied up in God’s expression of His love to His people and His church. Their non-traditional marriage vows from Hosea 2:19-20 were made in an attempt to allow Him to love them through each other. Though they fell short many times, God’s grace blessed their love and their marriage for over 50 years. A common question in the Auld household everyday was, “Have I told you how much I love you today?”
Vicki is survived by her husband John; their sons Peter-John and Judah; daughters by marriage and love Debbie and Stacy; their grandchildren Logan, Eloise (Ellie) and Luke; and her sister Connie Vogler and her brother Chris Vogler and sister-in-law Alice; numerous Vogler and Auld family members; and, of course, Rufus. She was predeceased by her parents Ernie and Marge, and John, an older brother who passed before she was born.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.chapelhill-butler.com for the Auld family.
