The daughter of Alfred and Genevieve Kuraner, she attended Kansas City, Missouri, public schools and Vassar College. She was preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Kuraner, Jr. and her husband, Allen D. Smith. After her children were grown, she worked as an office manager for an internal medicine practice and later an ophthalmology practice. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph Medical Center for many years and served on the Auxiliary Executive Board. Her memberships included Village Presbyterian Church and P.E.O. Missouri Chapter FE.
She and her husband, Allen, moved to Claridge Court Retirement Community, Prairie Village, Kansas, in 2009 (where she was the first second-generation resident). After his death in 2011 she continued to enjoy her many friends and the activities of the community.
The children who grew up in her comfortable and orderly home, and the grandchildren who followed, were shaped and inspired by her unfailing politeness, her kind and loving spirit, her fundamental decency, her reliable common sense, and her sharp but subtle wit--all expressed by the epitaph she repeatedly, self-deprecatingly requested: "She meant well."
She is survived by her children, Diane Bywaters Landon (John), David Alfred Bywaters (Cynthia), Deena Bywaters Schaffer (Rick), and Doris Bywaters Rice (Rob), her grandchildren Allen Landon (Andy), William Landon (Lauren), William Bywaters (Cindy), Susan Bywaters, Genna Thomas (Newton), Tricia Rogers (Geoff), Maggie Pendleton (Lane), Jill Lamphere (Justin), Tyler Rice (Erin), and Andrew Rice (Jessica) and great grandchildren Allena Landon; Brooks, Rosalie and Grant Landon; Ann and David Bywaters; Logan, Luke and Knox Thomas; Rhett and Cooper Pendleton; Hadley and Julian Rice; Elliott and Sylvia Rice.
A private family burial service will be at Mt Moriah Cemetery.
Contributions in Ann's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
