Anna Juanita Cox, 97, of Independence, MO passed away peacefully at The White Oak Assisted Living Facility on Sunday, April 10, 2022. She lived most of her married life in Kansas City and Independence, MO. She was born in Nolan, West Virginia to the late Andrew and Effie Noe on May 7, 1924. Her father was a coal miner in those days. They then moved to Ashland, Kentucky where he worked for Armco Steel. Juanita graduated from high school in Ashland, Kentucky in 1942, and moved to Dayton, Ohio to work for the government as a stenographer at Wright Field. She met a staff sergeant in the army air force named Tracy Cox while he was stationed at Patterson Field. They dated 6 months and were married April 16, 1943 in Richmond, Indiana. After 67 years of marriage, her husband Tracy preceded her in death in 2010. She also had a sister Wanda Stevens who preceded her in death in 1995.
She is survived by their four sons, Tracy, Maurice (Janice), Steve, and Andy (Vickie) Cox. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Laura (Ron) Vance, Michael (Rachel) Cox, Christopher (Sara) Cox, Margo (Jon) Wagner, Elizabeth Cox, and a granddaughter Melissa Cox who preceded her in death in 2019. She also had ten great grandchildren: Joshua, Jessica (Hunter), Jonathan (Alyssa), Justin, Austin, Lindsey, Hunter, Oliver, Theodore, and Benjamin.
Juanita was a Christian and she and Tracy attended Sterling Acres Baptist Church for years and later in life Norfleet Baptist Church where their son Maurice was the pastor. She taught in the Mother’s Day Out program at Sterling Acres and Tracy was a deacon and sang in the choir. Juanita was well known for her incredible pies, especially her apple pies with red hots. She was an accomplished seamstress, hand quilting over twenty beautiful quilts, all with different patterns and colors. In her younger days, she was always fixing up her house, painting, wall papering, ironing curtains, cleaning, and making sure her sons were well cared for and their clothes and shoes were impeccable. Every day meals were carefully thought out and delicious, always with a dessert afterwards. She loved to garden and had a variety of beautiful flowers all over her yard. Even in her later years at Hidden Lake Care Center, she enjoyed tending a small garden of flowers outside her back door.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, April 16, in the chapel from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., with the funeral ceremony at 11:00 at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133.
