I was a student of Dr. Koehler's ('87). She made a real difference in my life by showing confidence in my abilities and offering me a couple of opportunities that changed the direction of my life. My world is so much better for having known her.

Dr. Koehler, Oh what a pleasure! I am so sad to here about your passing. I remembered the intense debates we had in your Com 483 class. You said, "The ability to communicate is an art and it is needed in everything you do." I am paraphrasing, but it changed my life. Thank you for having faith in me. Thank you for pushing me and requiring more of me.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Koehler's passing.  She meant a lot to me when I was a student (class of '05) and helped me a great deal.  She was all around an awesome person and will be missed.

Thank you Dr. Koehler for the genuine concern you showed others and the intense passion you displayed in your work.  May God bless all of us as he blessed you.

All the words in the world would not be enough to say how sorry I am for your loss.  I still miss Carol's presence in the halls at UMKC where we often met and at the chairs meetings, where she was such a lively spirit.  We are so blessed to have had her in our midst, and my thoughts are with you all.

Please accept my condolences about Carol's passing.  It's hard to believe someone so good, caring and vibrant could be gone.  She must be somewhere brilliant; she deserves no less. 

Dr. Koehler was more than a teacher to me.  She was a friend with whom I could discuss literature and romance-era symphonies.  She was a mentor who looked out for me at all times.  And she was a confidant who never judged and always helped.  She cared for all her students deeply, and looked after me as though I were her own child.  I needed that.  She was like a second mother to me, and I loved her.

All I can think to do now is pray and thank God she was in my life.  And I will dedicate my first novel, which she proof-read despite her busy schedule, to her.  I can't squander the value she put on my life with her faith in me; I dedicate myself so that I can fulfill her faith.  Caringly yours,

I just heard the sad news about Carol's death.  I attended Trinity High School with Carol and we enjoyed many good times.  I remember our first meeting - freshman year, in home room.  She was magnetic.  Our class had many students - you remember several; but only a few make a lasting impression, and Carol was one of the few.  She was always special with a charming personality.  I often thought of getting in touch with Carol, especially when the Trinity High School news for alumnae came in the mail, but regretfully did not.  You are in my prayers; I am so sorry.

Dr. Koehler was such a caring, cheerful person, and I send my belated condolences to her family.  She was one of my favorite professors at UMKC, where I know she will be greatly missed.  Although I graduated back in 2002, Carol and I had recently corresponded by email.  She was as supportive and inspirational as ever.  Dr. Koehler sincerely cared about her students regardless of whether or not they were currently enrolled.  She saw them as individuals and wished them well in their lives.  I was so saddened to learn only yesterday of her passing.

"Sue and I were both truly saddened to hear of Carol's sudden passing.  We both considered Carol to be much more than a friend.  She was also clearly much admired by so many other people; a fact that is confirmed by the tributes left on her Facebook page in recent days.

She was always so kind and considerate and we welcomed seeing her at every opportunity.  We have a constant reminder of her, as there is a painting in our hall that comes from a photograph taken of the three of us when we first met in Snowmass just after Erica and James had met one another.

"In our lives we are touched by those who can truly teach us and show us so much about ourselves.  But so few of these same people find a permanent place in our hearts as Carol.

I met Carol over 29 years ago (August 1982) when she was completing her graduate study at UMKC and I was starting as an assistant professor in the department.  I knew as soon as we were introduced to one another that Carol would become one of my closest friends (fortunately, for me Carol reciprocated) and one of those few people to have an everlasting impact on my life.  You all know so well her love of life - - she lived every day and every moment to the fullest.  I know of only a handful of other people whose life can serve as an example for how the rest of us should live.  And yes, you are "spectacular" and "wonderful" children and grandchildren because you have two spectacular and wonderful parents.

Carol's office was next to mine.  We spent countless hours contemplating life in general and several research project that we planned and completed.  When I retired a year ago, I knew Carol and I would continue our friendship.  Now, I am glad I retired.  I don't know how I could bear to unlock my office door and not hear Carol say 'Hi, Michael.'  And then, I would either walk into her office or she into mine.  I will forever cherish all of our moments and I am already recalling several of them as I write this letter to you.

I will always feel Carol's presence -- her intellectual curiosity, her emotional expressiveness, and her spiritual center.  I don't know where Carol generated such energy for life; it certainly came from deep within her soul, her love for others and especially you, her loving family.

I know my words are of no consolation for your loss and your pain.  Carol is irreplaceable.  And that is why a copy of this letter and a picture of Carol are going into my family album. I will often open my family album to Carol's page.  May you always know Carol has a cherished place alongside my family.

Carol and I were always close friends, but with the recent passing of both my parents, Carol became even a closer friend to me.  She cried when I told her about my mother over the phone.  And Carol made certain that Kristin call me (my mother lived about 20' from Kristin.)  I was never more moved with Carol's display of concern for me. She received a $100 gift from her mother and spent it on a hat for herself that she had greatly admired, but could not afford . . . ignoring the more pressing financial need in front of her and Jerry.  Upon returning home, Jerry was shown the hat (was it red?) by an enthusiastic Carol.  He smiled and responded, 'well, you must have really needed that hat!'" Mr. Koehler, Jerry, Kristin, Gretchen, Moira and Erica... I am so sorry to hear about your mom, Mrs. Koehler.  My heart aches for you and i so wish i was there to give you all big hugs!  Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I express my sincere condolence to Carol's husband, children, grandchildren, and relatives.  Carol is such a dear colleague, friend, and mentor to me.  Her love has cheered up all people around her. I am so lucky to be one of her colleagues.  She will be deeply remembered in my heart.

Carol always pushed me to do more and show more--to take one more step than I wanted and breach my comfort zone.  I'm lucky to have known her.  She is missed.

 Dr. Carol Koehler was always encouraging and enthusiastic. She would not allow one (me) to simply settle for mediocracy. She was very honest as well, always seeking the best opportunity for students like myself. She will be missed and definitely remembered as on of the more influential people in my life. I am praying for your family and sending my condolences in this time of loss.

I just arrived this past September but Carol's voice (over the phone) was the first I heard from the UMKC 'family' as she was Chair of the Search Committee that hired me.  It was her enthusiasm, sincerity and commitment which made UMKC feel like the place to be ... so I came here when offered the position.  In a short time she became a colleague and good friend - I will miss her dearly.  My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family.

Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow for the loss of our dear Carol.  We had her in our UMKC family for over 25 years and she inspired and shaped us in countless ways.  She was everything you would want in a professor, a colleague and a friend.    It is truly incredible that we will no longer see her shining smile in the halls and elsewhere.   She was smart, kind, caring, feisty and endearing.  Personally, she was like a sister to me in so many ways and I will miss her tremendously.  I extend my  profound sympathy to her family at this time of great loss.

Carol was one of the greatest teachers I ever had the honor of knowing.  She pushed me to go beyond the walls of the classroom to do everything possible to prepare for the male-dominated field I was heading for after college.  She challenged our classes to learn the fundamentals, but then to expand on that and always break through the boundaries.  I am blessed to have remained in contact with her, and to have been able to call her a friend when I came back to work for UMKC.  With Carol, every conversation was lively, fun, and meaningful.  There are tears now, but complete joy that she was in my life.  God bless you Carol!  Because He certainly blessed us with you.

I agree with the sentiments of so many here. Carol was special and she changed the way I viewed my work and myself. She could inspire me in simple but meaningful ways, and I have always felt grateful for her influence on me. My heart goes out to her family.

Carol was such a fine colleague and friend who always seemed to make the good of the group and others her first priority.  The halls of UMKC won't be the same without her, but it is a much better place for having had her in our midst.

It is with such sadness that I am writing my condolences during this time of unfortunate loss to the Koehler family and the UMKC community. Dr. K was my favorite professor at the University level. Her passion and love for the students and their well-being was her greatest attribute. She was a great mentor to many that were fortunate enough to have known her. In celebration of Dr. K's life, "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." - Dr. Seuss.

I like to give my encouraging words to the family. I can imagine how heavy your hearts are at this time, this to will pass. Dr. Koeler made a great impression on my life.  She never allowed me to just get by.  Just as everyone has said she was a light that shined bright you couldn't help but do what she requested.  I am greatly saddened but she will always remain in my heart.  Many blessings through this transition.

Carol was always generous with her time, and supportive of her colleagues. Carol had a unique ability to transform an ordinary conversation into something meaningful and connective just be her presence. UMKC will not be the same without you.

To Carol's family – I am deeply sorry for your loss.  Your wife, mother and grandmother really made life better and richer.   The impact she had on me was profound.  She always had the  wisest, most confident response to any question I posed to her.  One of my favorite memories is when I asked if she ever saw being petite as a deficit (of course, I am petite, too)?  She responded, “I have always felt like the most powerful person in the room.”  She was – in so many ways.

Jerry and Gretchen, this comes from very old friends from grade school days; the Churchill family. Paul and I still think of you often and when we came across this our hearts went out to you both. We just want you to know that you and your family are in our families thoughts and prayers. May  memories of your mom live on in your heart always and bring a smile to you when you least expect it. As a UMKC communications student and later staff member at the university, I often interacted with Carol. I echo what everyone else has said here. She was always positive, caring, helpful, and a great listener. I was shocked and saddened to hear this news and my thoughts go out to her family.

Whenever I ran into Carol in the halls at UMKC or in meetings I'd pick up some of her positive energy and commitment to making the world a better place. She radiated concern and generosity. I will miss her very much.

I am saddened by this news.  I was in class with Carol in the mid 80s and we kept in touch over the years.  She was a bright light wherever she went and will be missed.  My heart goes out to her family.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Dr. Koehler. She was a fabulous teacher and an even better person who touched so many lives in a positive way. She was a great lady and will be dealrly missed.

It comes as an utter shock to me that Dr. Koehler will no longer be around the spread her joy, smiles, & wisdom with those around her.  As the work study for the Communication Studies Department, I've had the pleasure of seeing Carol on a regular basis for the past 2 years.  She would always provide me with some of best advice to prepare me for the "real world" as I have worked toward my graduation date.  The theme of most of our conversations pertaining to school & life is that "if there is something you want in life, get it.  Honey, don't you let anything stand in your way!"  Although this is a very sad time in many of our lives, I am continuously uplifted by the memory of her humor & sharp wit!  I cannot count a moment that I didn't share several laughs with this wonderful woman.  I love you Dr. Koehler & my life has been forever changed since meeting you!

I just read of Carol's passing and am so shocked!  She came to my retirement reception a few weeks ago and said so many kind things about me.  Now I'll never be able to let her know how special she was!  All who knew her know that she was special and that she will be deeply missed.  My heartfelt condolences to her husband and children and rest of her family and colleagues, and may she rest in peace.
