He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan Gilbert Paine and Lillian Henry Kennedy; a brother, Paul Paine; three wives, Jeannie, Ernestine, and Louise. His survivors include his son, Charles Keith Paine, and his wife, Sue, of Grandview, MO; two daughters, Angela Farley of Mayview, MO, and Christy Ann Paine; three grandchildren, Joe Paine, and his wife, Channing, of Belton, MO; Lora Paine, of Grandview, MO; and Joshua Paine, and his wife, Carri, of Galva, KS; two great grandchildren, Jeremiah Kimmel and Kimber Paine; one sister-in-law, two nieces, and a nephew; close companion, Patty Coy, and her family.
Charles was born on June 26, 1931, in Kansas City, Kansas, in Wyandotte County, to Nathan Gilbert Paine and Lillian Henry Paine. He grew up in a home where he worked to help support his family, working in a grocery store at the age of ten. He attended Wyandotte High School, but left school during the tenth grade. He went on to various jobs: setting pens at a bowling alley, working at Doolan’s grocery store, and Townley Metal & Hardware, where he became department manager. He later became employed at Johnson Furnace. Then he went to sheet metal school, where he diligently prepared for his future career. He was a member of the Local #2 Sheet Metal Union for over forty years. He enjoyed his work in sheet metal, mainly working at Truog Nichols and Performance Contractors. He was very skilled in fabricating metal, preparing detailed layouts and constructing metal structures and heating and air units for public buildings, residences, and nuclear power plants. He received his forty-year pin from the sheet metal union in April 2004. He was highly respected by all with whom he worked as a craftsman and a foreman.
He had the unfortunate circumstance of losing three wives through death. He lost his wife, Jeannie, to cancer at the age of nineteen. Later, on November 2, 1957, he married Ernestine, to whom he was married for forty years until she passed away in September 1998. He remarried again on January 16, 2000, spending nearly twelve years married to Louise, who passed away in November 2011. During the past six years he has been so blessed to have Patty Coy as his dear friend and companion. They have brought mutual joy to one another, living on the same hall at John Knox Village. God used Patty in his life to help draw him into a relationship with Christ. As he began to attend church meetings with Patty, his interest in spiritual things increased. He began reading his Bible regularly. Then, on August 13, 2017, he publicly professed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior during one of the meetings. He was baptized in a pond in Blackwater, Missouri, on September 29, 2018, publicly declaring his faith in Christ.
Among his interests throughout the year has been his love of bluegrass music and playing the guitar. He played for many years in several bluegrass bands. He has also demonstrated a great love for his family, having a special place in his heart for his three grandchildren, his great grandson, and his first great granddaughter, born on January 26 of this year. He also spent time with his good friend, Patty, as they were involved in working jigsaw puzzles and other activities. He will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
A visitation will be held from 1-2pm, service 2pm, on Thursday, July 28, at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. Burial to follow at Floral Hills Cemetery.
