Cheryl was born February 23, 1950, in Springfield, Missouri to Robert Medley and Jessie Opal (Hull) Towe, the second oldest of four children. She grew up in Mansfield, Missouri, and graduated from Mansfield High School and then University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree. Following college, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri. While working at Commerce Bank, she met her husband, Tom Steffens, and married a year later on June 24, 1972. They recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Cheryl and Tom welcomed their first son, Brenden, in 1976, followed by Tim in 1981 and Gregory in 1984. Once all were in school, Cheryl taught in the Kansas City Kansas and Lee’s Summit School districts. She would later earn her master’s degree in speech and language pathology and spend more than 25 years in the education system, where she was beloved by her students and colleagues.
In June 2006, Cheryl and Tom earned one of their favorite titles, becoming grandparents to their first of five beautiful grandchildren, Rocco, Nino, Jeremy, Haley and Anthony. Cheryl was a devoted and doting grandma who loved attending sports activities, playing games, spending time with them, and sharing stories about her grandchildren with all her friends.
Cheryl loved spending time with her many friends, including her birthday club, bowling league and others. She was an avid reader, a wonderful gardener and had a special eye for upcycling home decor. Cheryl was a blessing to all who had the joy to know her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to countless people, blessing them with her energy, humor, selflessness and love.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her sons Gregory and Timothy, parents Robert and Opal Towe; parents-in-law Larry and Mildred; brother, Wayne Towe; brother-in-law Bobby Blankenship.
She is survived by her husband Tom Steffens; son Brenden (Dina) Steffens, daughter-in-law, Christina Steffens; five grandchildren: Rocco (18), Nino (16) Jeremy (15), Haley (13) and Anthony (11); sister Vicki Blankenship; brother Rick Towe (Kathy); sister-in-law Nancy Towe; sister-in-law Sandy (Rod) Birk; brother-in-law Kevin (Judy) Steffens, and many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.
