

David Bruce Holland, 89, Prairie Village, Kansas, died on April 13, 2012. He was born January 7, 1923, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska. He also graduated from the U.S. Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., obtaining a Degree in Meteorology. In December 1942, David enlisted in the Navy, and received his Navy wings on Nov. 30, 1943. As a Navy pilot, he flew in the Pacific theater during the war. He was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, for two years and flew Search and Rescue. He later had duty in Newfoundland and Greenland, and also flew Ice Reconnaissance in the Arctic Basin. Stationed aboard the U.S.S. Independence Aircraft Carrier for 2 1/2 years, he was, among other things, an instructor of Naval Sea Cadets in meteorology. David married Dorothy Beth Thomas on December 31, 1947, and the couple had three children, Lori, Bruce and David Jr. His grandchildren include David C. Holland, Steven M. Holland, Andrea M. Holland, Coreen A. Walters and Skyler C. Walters. Retiring as a Commander after 22 years of active duty, David became a manufacturer's representative in the Midwest for 18 years. He also served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Red Bridge, and as a Boy Scout leader and Merit Badge counselor. David Holland is survived by his wife of 64 years, his children and his grandchildren. The family will conduct a private graveside service Tuesday, April 17, at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
