DOROTHY MARIE BREWSTER Dorothy Marie Brewster, 89, of Independence, completed her journey home to be with our Heavenly Father on May 7, 2015. Friends are invited to gather this Monday, May 11th for the Visitation from 10-11:30 a.m. immediately followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m., both at Saint Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, MO. Interment will immediately follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City. Dorothy was born on April 28, 1926, and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. A neighbor, William J. Brewster, captured her heart at the young age of 14. After returning safely home from serving his country during World War II, the childhood sweethearts were married in 1946. They were blessed with four children. Dorothy worked as a teacher’s aide for the Kansas City School District. She also worked as a secretary for the Queen City Athletic Association. Dorothy was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many. She was also a constant philanthropist and served God and her church. Dorothy loved attending her kids’ and grandkids’ sports and events, traveling, doing counted cross-stitch, getting a sun tan (especially while mowing the yard on her riding lawnmower), and spending time with family and friends. She believed in giving back, and did so through countless hours of volunteering as a leader for the Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts, helping at the Roger T. Sermon Community Center, and as a bell-ringer for The Salvation Army. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Marie Dunn; husband William Brewster; daughter Nancy Saunders-Cromer; and grandson Joseph Soule. Dorothy leaves behind daughter Carol Engleman (Larry); daughter Mary Kisner (Ben); son William Brewster Jr. (Kathy); son-in-law Clif Cromer; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and life-long friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Independence Salvation Army, Kansas City Hospice, the University of Central Missouri William & Dorothy Brewster and Nancy Saunders-Cromer Scholarship Fund, or the St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlain, SD.
