Dovie Louise Lanos

Dovie Louise Lanos was born in Washburn, Missouri on January 14, 1916 to Samuel Hardy Dalton and Nellie Mae. She had two sisters, Eva and Ferry, both deceased. She was married to William T. Lanos for 49 years when he passed. Dovie had two children, Ted Lanos, deceased and she is survived by Connie Lanos Messner. She thought of Connie’s husband Jim as her son and loved him very much. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Bill Lanos, Nick Lanos, Susie Raskin, Sam Groh, Joe Groh and Erik Messner, and has four great grandchildren, Kaley Raskin, Sydney Raskin, Naomi Lanos and Joe Tiger Groh. She worshipped them all.

Dovie came to Kansas City to live when she was 19 years old. She met Bill at the Superior Laundry where she worked and immediately fell for him. She often told me the story of how he “wowed” her with his greek charm! She worked for Sears as a payroll clerk and accountant for 25 years when she retired.

Dovie loved her “hometown” of Belton, Missouri and had many friends there. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and was very proud to be one of their sisters. Dovie would stop anything and everything she was doing to play with her grandchildren. Sometimes for hours at a time playing a game she called hide the thimble. She loved to laugh, sing, play poker, quilt, knit, sew and cook!

Dovie was a wonderful cook! She could make a cobbler out of anything she could find in the pantry with a homemade crust. She learned to make Baklava from Bill’s Greek family and it quickly became her signature pastry at Christmas!

Dovie was a trickster, a kidder, a great friend, a wonderful grandmother and a loving mother. She did not judge anyone and she did not know a stranger. Her motto: Make do with what you have!

Dovie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Blue Springs and Belton, Missouri.

Visitation will be held from 12:00-1:00 p.m. followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, at Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
