

Edward L Pierce, 87, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday May 15th, 2011. Ed was born on September 29, 1923 to Ray & Alma Pierce of Chanute, KS. Edward joined the Army in 1939 and fought in World War II as a member of the 35th Division. Ed was a member of the Island Hoppers that fought in Saipan and Okinawa. He received battle stars for his service in Saipan and Okinawa. He was a member of Marshall Gilberts and Mary Anna’s Group. He was a member of the 35/27 & 2nd armored division and was honorably discharged in 1945. Ed was a Master Sergeant in the army reserves from 1949 to 1964. Ed was a long time resident of Kansas City’s West Side, worked heavy construction, and was a member of the 541 teamsters union. After retiring from construction he worked as a Deputy Marshall for the Missouri State Court of Appeals Western District. He enjoyed every day he worked with the judges, lawyers, and other staff members. Ed married Martha C. Leeper in 1948, she preceded him in death in 1994.
Ed is survived by his son, David L. Pierce and wife Virginia Pierce, who cared for him for over 10 years in their home. A son, Ray E. Pierce and wife Peggy survive him. He leaves behind four grandchildren: Ray E. Pierce, JR, Shawn M. Pierce, Stephanie L. Thomas and husband Sean, Kimberly M. Flores and husband Stephen, all of Kansas City; and five great- grandchildren: Justin D. Thomas, Ryan K. Thomas, Cody R. Pierce, Bailey Pierce and Caden M. Flores.
Visitation will be 6-8 pm on Thursday, May 19 at McGilley Midtown Chapel, 20 W. Linwood Blvd. Funeral service will be 10:00 am on Friday at the funeral home with burial to follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Kansas City Hospice House, 12200 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64145.
