

Emerson Lewis Dow was born March 14, 1925 in Salina, Kansas to Vina Sayles-Dow and Lewis V. Dow. He was a member of the St. John’s Baptist Church and graduated from Salina High School in 1942. In 1943 he was drafted into the Army and served as a Military Policeman in Italy guarding the airport. He went to military engineering school in 1945 and was trained in demolition and how to defuse mines. He received an honorable discharge from the military in 1946 and enrolled in Kansas Wesleyan University. He earned a BBA degree in 1950. He also joined the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. After college he moved to Kansas City and started working for the government as a railroad mail clerk. He retired from the railroad and worked for the welfare department as a social worker, worked as a substitute teacher, acquired a real estate license, and worked as an auditor for the State of Missouri. Emerson left this life on July 5th, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, three sisters and son Ralph E. Dow. He is survived by his wife Nadine, his daughters Elaine Cosby and Wanda Jones, who all live in Raytown, MO. He also has three grandchildren Elise Cosby, Stephanie Betts and Gregory Dow, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a foster daughter Rene’e Johnson.
