

Eugene Anthony Higgins, 90, Gladstone, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at NorthCare Hospice. He was born in Clinton, Missouri, grew up in Red Oak, Iowa, moved to Columbus, Nebraska in 1939, and to Gladstone in 1965. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer, Mr. Higgins was an employee of the Social Security Administration from 1965 to 1988, when he retired. While working for the Social Security Administration, he received a Commissioner’s Citation in 1982. He was a Catholic and a member of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3414, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 161, and American Legion Post 84. He is survived by his children, Kathleen Higgins (Austin, Texas), Timothy Higgins and spouse Renee (Prairie Village), Colleen Cook and spouse Will (Kansas City), Jeanine Felten and spouse Steve (Gladstone), Maureen Daily and spouse Bill (Kansas City), and James Higgins (Kansas City); grandchildren Caitlin Higgins, Jeffrey and Matthew Cook, Allison, Rachel, Daniel, Brett, and Marcus Felten; and Kevin and Emily Daily (all of the Kansas City area); sister-in-law Geraldine Higgins (Columbus, Nebraska); brother-in-law Tony Augustine (Columbus, Nebraska); and 13 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Kathryn Ann (Merz), brother Francis (Bud), and sisters Margaret (Peggy) Syslo, Mary Cecile Higgins, and Phyllis Augustine. Visitation will be 10-11am, Monday, September 30, 2013 at St. Charles Catholic Church, 900 Shady Lane, Kansas City, MO, followed by Mass at 11am. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Sullivan Center or City Union Mission.
