Frank was born on September 2, 1922 in Morris, Illinois. He was the son of Van and Olga (Petersen) Petersen.
After graduating high school, Frank joined the United States Army in 1943 and was a WWII veteran. Frank met Doris Putnam while he was on leave and the rest is history. They were married on November 28, 1946. Together, while raising their family they lived in Champaign IL, Lebanon IN, Park Forest IL and Metuchen and Edison NJ. Frank retired as a Regional Supervisor with the USDA in 1985. In 1990 they moved to Kansas City to be closer to their daughters and enjoy retirement. They were active members at St Thomas More Catholic Church, More friends and Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at St Joseph Medical Center, Seton Center, Kiwanis Club and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Petersen, son William Van Petersen, two brothers and three sisters.
Frank is survived by his daughter, Susan Tobler and husband, William "Toby", daughter Rebecca Zielinski and husband, Robert, grandchildren Jamie Doris Rattray and husband Danny, Brian Tobler and wife, Laurie, Teresa Sherman and husband Tucker, Robert Zielinski, Joseph Zielinski and wife Erin, great grandchildren Paige Tobler, Brock Tobler, Lindsay Tobler, Connor Tobler, Kamila Sherman, Andrew Sherman and Caroline Zielinski.
Frank was a family man and proudly attended the grandchildren's sporting events over the years. He had a great sense of humor and always had a story to tell sharing his experiences and memories from his 102 years. Frank loved to fish and all the grandkids have special memories of fishing with grandpa.
He will be greatly missed and we will always remember his faithful goodbye line whenever we left his house, "Be careful out there!"
