

Gary Alan McCready, 85, of south Kansas City, passed away on October 21, 2019 at St, Luke’s East. A Graveside Service will be 2:00pm, on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
Mr. McCready was born in Englewood, Colorado, and raised in the Denver area. After serving with the US Army overseas, he moved to Kansas City and joined the KCMO Police Department in May of 1957, just in time to assist in the Ruskin Heights tornado cleanup. After serving in patrol and vice, he spent most of his career as a Detective Sergeant in Crimes Against Persons, working robbery and homicide. He was administrative aide to two chiefs of police, and was an original member of the Metropolitan Major Case Squad (Metro Squad).
He graduated from Central Missouri State College with a BS in Criminal Justice, and was a graduate of the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville. He also studied at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and attended many other police-related classes.
After retiring from the department in 1982, he conducted investigations for AMC Theatres, and traveled extensively throughout the United States. He loved playing in his poker group and working in his yard. He spent much time on his patio and enjoyed being outdoors. He was a good neighbor and a good friend. Attending Village Presbyterian Church for many years, he especially enjoyed the Wednesday night dinners with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Joan Pennington McCready.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Teri and JR Foster of Lee's Summit; three grandchildren, Katina, Kyle and Kimberly; a sister, Mary Alice Lydick, Denver; brother-in-law & sister-in-law Mike and Debbie Pennington; and many nieces and nephews.
