

Glendon George Stetson, 87, passed away on April 13, 2011 after nearly ten years as a resident at Aberdeen Village, Olathe. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Glen was born February 15, 1924 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire to Ralph E. and Florence (Gerald) Stetson. Following graduation in 1943 from Exeter, New Hampshire High School, he entered the U.S. Army. Shipped first to North Africa in late 1943, Glen then fought with the 88th Infantry Division through Italy entering Rome with the Allied forces on the first day of its liberation in June, 1944. He was severely wounded, September 30, 1944, by a German artillery shell on the 3,000 foot summit of Mt. Battaglia north of Florence, Italy. A recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, he spent nearly four years in several military hospitals recovering from his wounds. Following his discharge from the Army, he went on to receive his B.S. in Entomology in 1952 and a Masters degree in 1954 from the University of New Hampshire where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. He began his career with Niagara Chemical Company in New York where he met and married his wife of 50 years, Martha Eva (Reid) Stetson, on July 14, 1956. In August 1962, the family moved to Leawood, Kansas where he continued his 35 year career with Chemagro Corporation that later became Mobay Chemical and is now Bayer Corporation, at both the Farm in Stanley and the Hawthorne plant in Kansas City, retiring as Manager of Research & Development Planning. The family joined Colonial Presbyterian Church upon their arrival in Kansas City where Glen served as both a Deacon and an Elder. Glen and Martha enjoyed their retirement years working in the yard, spending time with friends, family, grandchildren, and traveling to their condo in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Glen was preceded in death by Martha in 2006 and brothers Elvin, Henry, and Gerald, all World War II veterans as well. Survivors include his son, Alan Stetson, Overland Park and daughter, Nancy Jaques and her husband Dick, Norman, OK; grandchildren, Matt, Emily and Bethany Jaques and James and Rachel Stetson; as well as a number of very special nieces and nephews.
