

James Neil Crain, a devoted and selfless father, passed away on September 13, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on October 3, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, James was the beloved son of Clifford and Veryl Crain and grew up with two siblings, Nancy and Bill. He spent his formative years in the Grandview school system, where he laid the foundations for a life marked by bravery, hard work, and compassion.
James graduated from William Jewell College in 1967 and furthered his education by earning a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His dedication to service was evident early on as he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1961 and became a Sachem in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on January 29, 1971.
After his military service, James embarked on a successful 34-year career with Hallmark Cards, where he retired as an Operations Manager in 2004. His professional life was characterized by wisdom and dedication, qualities that he carried into his personal endeavors.
James was married to Vonda for 46 cherished years, a testament to his faithfulness and devotion. Together, they raised two daughters, Lori and Tara, and were blessed with six grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life.
Outside of his professional and family commitments, James enjoyed visiting his weekend lake house in Stockton, deer hunting, and engaging in civil service. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and the Kansas City Chiefs, and he found joy in camping and participating in Scouts.
James's commitment to community was unwavering. He served as a Grandview Alderman for 40 years and was actively involved with the Grandview Parks and Recreation Commission, the Grandview Assistance Program, and the Youth Court Treasurer. His legacy is one of faithfulness and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on those he served and loved.
He is survived by his daughters Lori Crain and Tara Crain (Kyle), his sister Nancy Carney and brother Bill Crain (Rita). Grandchildren include Benjamin Harter, Jonathan Kirke, Zachary Kirke, Samantha (Blaize) Kuhlmann, Gabriella and Hanna Steinke.
He is preceded in death by his wife Vonda, and his parents Clifford and Veryl Crain.
James valued his family deeply, a core foundation of his life. His selfless nature and wise counsel will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
