He was born in Kansas City, MO on March 27, 1951 to James Morris Legg and Florence Ellen (Keck) Legg.
He was diagnosed with melanoma in 2019 but the tumors really decided to take over in December 2022 and moved quickly.
Jim graduated from Raytown High School in 1969. He attended Central Missouri State University, earning a bachelor and master’s degree in education.
One of his greatest accomplishments in life was teaching 7th grade science to thousands of kids for 31 years (and many valuable life lessons too) at Plaza and Lakeview Middle Schools in the Park Hill School District.
He loved playing football and baseball as a child, rugby in college, and senior slow-pitch softball as an adult.
He married the love of his life, Donna (Hellman) on August 3rd, 1974. They were highly blessed with a daughter, Allison, in 1984.
When Jim retired from teaching, he filled his new found “free time” working for a small start-up online baseball supply business called Pro Athlete. He had many jobs and duties as the company grew larger, but he always brought the smiles and laughter with practical jokes.
During the summers, he loved going on scuba diving trips with Donna, exploring exotic locations and searching for magical ocean creatures. His favorite trip was to Borneo and Sipadan Island where they swam with giant sea turtles.
For sure his greatest joy was being the best Gda to his grandkids, Dillon James (3) and Lucy Anna (2). The self-appointed name of Gda comes from his love of reading and is a loose Norwegian translation for Grand Dad.
He took serious the duty of spoiling his grandkids rotten. You could often find him squirting canned whipped cream into their mouths.
He was fiercely loyal, a proud provider and a gentle yet firm teacher. He will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on and impact his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Donna and his dog, JB. His daughter, Allison Lane (Colter) and his two awesome yet unpredictable grandkids, Dillon (3) and Lucy (2).
Visitation is from 1-2pm and the service is at 2pm. It will be on Monday, May 8th, 2023 at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133.
