James L. Wessling, Sr.

James L. Wessling, Sr. passed away on May 1, 2015. On Thursday, May 7th the rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, KS followed by visitation and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to International Life Services, 2606 1/2 W. 8th, Los Angeles, CA 90057 or Catholic Community Hospice, 9740 W. 87th St.,Overland Park, KS 66212.

Jay was born April 17, 1926, in Kansas City, MO to Frank A. and Frances Wessling. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1943 and received a Bachelors degree from Rockhurst College. On November 22, 1952, he married Betty Vandegaer who preceded him in death in 1998. Jay had a long career in accounting and finance with Pillsbury, Far-Mar-Co. and retired as Treasurer of Farmers Export Co. Not willing to end his working life he formed Blue Jay Homes Inc. and built quality houses in Olathe, Lee’s Summit and Shawnee. After his second retirement he was the primary caregiver for Betty until she passed away. With his family, and pop up camper in tow, they camped in 45 different states and in Canada. Jay was a devout Catholic and there was never a day camping without a rosary being prayed. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish for 35 years and lived the last 4 years at Santa Marta Retirement Community where he regularly attended daily Mass.

In addition to Betty, Jay was preceded in death by his daughter Paula Ziegler, his parents and all of his siblings, Frank (F.A), Audrey, Raymond, Urban and Vincent. He is survived by his children, Mary Beth (David), Jay (Kathy), and Matt (Colleen); 9 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.
