She is survived by her devoted son, Mark Ackerson (Donna) of Peculiar Missouri, Ron Dery of Edwardsville Kansas and daughter in law, Mindy Ackerson of St. Louis, Missouri. Being highly intelligent, Janet moved through school at a rapid pace. Testing higher than average, she skipped several grades and soon graduated Stanley High School at age 16. Taking time off to earn money for college, she taught school at the early age of 17. She then attended Pittsburg State University, graduating in 1953 and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha.
Serving nearly 35 years in Education in the Hickman Mills School District, she spent much of her career teaching at Warford Elementary School. She adored and touched the lives of hundreds of students and made lifelong friends amongst her fellow teachers.
Outside of teaching in the classroom, she was active in many educational organizations. With over 50 years as a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, she served different officer roles, including three terms as President. She was a member of NEA, MRTA, and the Hickman Mills Retired School Personnel. Three times nominated and chosen to be in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in the ’92, ’94, and ’96 editions.
She loved to travel with family and friends; the only state she missed was Hawaii. She loved the ocean and taking a nice walk on the beach or reading a book and listening to the waves. She was famous for collecting lighthouse figurines and seashells on her trips.
Janet was a talented artist and had a love for painting. This extended to every decoration in her home that she thought needed a little something extra to make it just right.
Janet was truly an angel on earth who will be deeply missed by family and all who had the pleasure in life to have met her. Words do not describe the devotion and love that she had for all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was happiest when her home was full of conversation and laughter from the people she loved most.
