Jean was born on May 15, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri to Jean and Marcel Mooney. She graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School and studied at the University of Iowa from 1966 through 1971. On November 6th, 1976 she married Philip Stabler and they raised two sons, Joshua and Donovan.
Jean loved running and competing and achieved some success as an age group runner in her sixties. She often joked, “I didn’t have to get faster, just older.” She was introduced to cycling by her husband Phil, and the two of them rode bikes all over the world. From Vietnam to Tuscany and Prague to the coast of Spain, Jean got to explore the world from the seat of a bicycle. She loved dogs and the family was never without one. It was always a rescue because “they are the smartest”.
She loved all music, but mainly folk music and old rock and roll. She taught folk guitar while at the University of Iowa.
Jean was quiet and content to sit and listen, but a fierce and vocal defender and advocate for her boys and her good friends. It was well known that you could say what you wanted unless you started dissing the people she loved.
Jean was preceded in death by her father Marcel Mooney, her mother Jean Martin Mooney, and her stepfather Ralph Martin. She is survived by her husband Phil, her brother William Mooney, her sons Joshua and Donovan, her grandchildren Maison, Hudson, Chuck, and Scarlett, and many beloved cousins, nephews and a nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Jean on September 2nd, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at McGilley State Line Chapel at 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
