Jennie Sallas, born in Moberly, Missouri in 1924, departed this life on Dec. 27, 2019 to join Our Lord and Savior, her loving husband Jim, her parents William J. and Katherine Tallen and sisters Panyota and Geneva.
While attending Moberly Junior College, she worked part time for the US Selective Service at the outset of WWII. After graduation, she worked at the Hunter, Chamier & Motley law firm in Moberly until she was married in 1950 and moved to Kansas City, Missouri Jennie was a faithful member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Kansas City, Missouri where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School from 1958-1987, was an active member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and served as a volunteer at the church library. Jennie loved being with family and friends, cooking and hosting dinners in her home. Later in life she became a caregiver for her parents, in-laws and husband. She loved gardening, reading, sewing, crocheting, volunteering and helping others. She was a prolific letter writer keeping in contact with extended family and remembering friends and family birthdays and namedays. The latter years of her life she resided in Florham Park, New Jersey followed by Plano, Texas.
She will be remembered for her words of encouragement to the young, thoughtfulness, generous spirit and willingness to help others. She is survived by her son John Sallas, William Sallas and wife, Maria, her granddaughter Eleni Marx and husband Brian, nieces Kathryn Hauptmann, Connie Redmond and nephew Athan Perahoritis and their families. Through marriage she is preceded in death by her nieces Angela Henderson and Evelyn Panos and survived by her niece Mea Childers and nephews John Ladas, Clem Ladas and Nick Sallas and their families.
The visitation will be held Thursday, January 2 from 5:00-7:00pm followed by a Trisagion prayer service at Mt. Moriah Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Jennie’s funeral will be at 10:00am, Friday, January 3 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 12001 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64145. The mercy meal at the church will follow her internment at Forest Hill and Calvary Cemetery.
