

Jerome “Jerry” Davis Overstreet, 81, loving husband, father, grandfather and a true southern gentleman, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015 in Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. followed by funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd. Interment in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Jerry was born February 23, 1934 in Kissimmee, FL. He married Sondra J. Rager on August 13, 1954. Jerry attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship playing as half back. He was a member of ATO Fraternity. In 1959 Jerry graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-56. Jerry worked in the construction business from 1959 until his retirement and was directly involved in construction projects and industrial chimney engineering projects in 25 states, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada and Indonesia.
Jerry was a member in various organizations: City Councilman of Overland Park 1979-1986, Republican Precinct Committeeman beginning 1977, Chairman Public Safety Committee 1983-1984, Chairman Public Works Committee 1985-1986, City Council President 1982, City Representative on Mid-America Regional Council-Total Transportation Policy Committee, City Representative on Johnson County Fire Services Coordinating Committee, Masonic Lodge-Overland Park No. 436, and Scottish Rite-Kansas City, KS Consistory. In 1986 Jerry was appointed by President Reagan to Regional Director of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Region VII in Kansas City, MO. He was responsible for the administration of FEMA’s programs and activities in the states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. He was also a member of the Senior Barn Players and Grace Point Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and sang in the choir.
His hobbies were cooking, golf and amateur plays. He enjoyed watching the Florida Gators play football live and on TV, working crossword and Sudoku puzzles, taking classes to learn new things then sharing his newly learned skills with whoever would listen.
He was preceded in death by his father Murray Overstreet, Sr, mother Edna Davis Overstreet, and brother Murray Overstreet, Jr. He is survived by his wife Sondra, three children Bill, Cindy, Debbie, six grandchildren Jamie, Sydney, Kelly, Dustin, Tiffani and Jordan, and four great-grandchildren.
The family requests contributions be made in his name to Grace Point Baptist Church, 10415 Chestnut Drive, Kansas City, MO 64137.
