James Earl Mills, 85, of Overland Park, KS passed away August 4th, 2017 at his home after a hard fought battle with cancer. “Jim”, son of Hazel Black and Harmon Berford “HB” Mills Sr., is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Chaney Mills, and daughter Brenda (Phillip) Sanders of Leawood, KS. He is also survived by his two grandchildren Kirk (Kari) Wood of Excelsior, MN and Kylie (Eric) Owens of Leawood, KS, and four beautiful great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Kali, Tommy and Ella. Jim is also survived by his siblings, Trish Gregory of Bradenton, FL and Harmon Berford Mills, Jr. of Salem, IL, along with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Jim was born and raised in Benton, IL in a loving family and upon graduation from Benton High School, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. Following his service, he moved to Dallas, TX and met the love of his life Marjorie. He began a 30 year career with IBM and upon retirement he was able to purse his love and passion for the game of golf. His greatest days included playing golf with his grandchildren and his friends. He enjoyed playing well, but it was those that he played with that meant the most to him. Jim also brought the game of golf to many. If you were willing to learn, he would help you all day long. He served on the board of the Kansas City Golf Association and was a rules official for 25 years. He was active in the Kansas Junior Golf Association where he mentored many Junior Golfers who meant the world to him. His spirit will live on in the many stories told and fond memories shared.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Monday, August 7th at McGilley State Line Chapel. Visitation will be held at 3pm, followed by the service at 4pm. Golf attire most welcome, of course. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be sent to the Kansas City Golf Association so that many more children will learn and enjoy the game of golf.
