

Joe was born June 5, 1933 to Horst & Charlotte Guenther in Bautzen, Germany. He migrated to the U.S. in 1952. Joe entered the draft in October of 1953 and spent two years in the Army where he learned to play the guitar, joined Special Forces & received an Honorable Discharge. Joe trained as a mechanic and machinist in Germany; while still attending high school. After the Army he worked as a machinist by trade and was a musician by his passion. Joe retired from both in 1998. He then worked as a mail clerk for a local nonprofit community mental health agency for 9 years. Joe's hobbies included the love of reading, cooking, working on his cars and soccor (both as a coach & a spactator).
Joe is survived by his wife, JoAnn; daughters, Cindy Hodges (Doug) & Linda Abbott; son, Marty (Melissa); three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Manfred (Margot); sister, Christine (Glenn) and cats, Stubby, Ebbe, Lily, Freddie and most recently Blackie. Joe also took care of (fed and watered) several strays the he, his wife,JoAnn & a neighbor caught, had spayed or nuetered then released. Klik, Klak, Mama Cat, Tommy Shoes & several others that showed up for the twice daily feedings.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions in Joe's name to the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, KS 66212 or to the Kansas City Pet Project, 4400 Raytown Rd., Kansas City, MO 64129.
