John Carl Greenberg was born on September 18, 1934 to Mary Emma (Gunther) Greenberg and Charles Greenberg, in Ft. Benning Georgia. John was the 4th of 6 children; Florence , Charlie, Richard, John, and twins Betty and Kitty. Growing up the family lived in Georgia, then the Panama Canal Zone until the start of WWII. It was then they moved back to Edgewood, Maryland.
John graduated from Bel Air High school in Bel Air, Maryland. He then served in the Air Force from February 1954 to October 1957. John then served in the Reserves until February 1962. He was especially proud of his service to his country. After serving in the Air Force, he worked at Diamond Chemical Company, Edgewood Arsenal Plant, Maryland.
John met and fell in love with Ruby (Hash) Overbay and moved to Missouri when Diamond Chemical shut down. The true testament to the type of man he was, is that he not only moved to Missouri with Ruby, but also with her 5 children. John found a job with S&G Metals, where he worked for 8 years. After applying to General Motors years before, they were finally hiring again and he got the job! John worked for the next 28 years at GM as a millwright and retired in 2008.
John was a devoted son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He brought a woman with 5 children across the country and raised them as his own. He was a wonderful father and worked hard all his life to make sure the family had everything they needed. When the grandchildren/great grandchildren started arriving, he was a devoted “Poppy” and, as would be expected, spoiled them completely. We will be eternally thankful for his generosity, love, and, most of all, his patience.
John, also known as Johnnie Boy, will be missed more than can be expressed. He is preceded in death by his wife Ruby, his parents and brothers, children Eddie Overbay and daughter Patricia Overbay. Also, by his beloved dog, Sugar, who was his pride and joy.
John is survived by his sisters Florence Black, Kitty Merkey, Betty, and sons, Jerry Overbay (Ruth) and Dennis Overbay, and daughters Deborah (Overbay) Knight, and Barbara Fuller (Mike), and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He was loved and his laugh, jokes, and storytelling are going to be missed.
