

John O. Hammons, 92, of Independence, MO passed away Monday, August 28, 2017 in Independence, MO after a brief battle with cancer. Visitation 6-8pm Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St., KCMO 64133. Funeral service 1:30pm Friday, September 1, 2017 at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel with burial to follow at The Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, MO.
John was born on August 28, 1925 in Clinton, MO to D.C. and Bertha Hammons and grew up in Pleasant Hill, MO. He served in the United States Army in WWII, was wounded in Northern France in 1945 discharged and awarded the Purple Heart. John went on to build custom homes for 35 years and spending as much time as he could fishing. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church, the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW and the American Legion. John had a heart of gold; always wanting to help friends and family any way he could. He will be greatly missed by all.
John was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Norma G. Hammons; one son, Steve Hammons; four grandchildren, Stephanie Montavy and Shawn, Shain and Brennan Hammons; three great grandchildren, Michelle and Christian Montavy and Carter Hammons.
