

John Sharp Hill, 102, passed peacefully on Sun., Oct. 2, 2016, with family by his side. Born Aug. 11, 1914, in Burlington, IA, John graduated from the University of Iowa in 1941, with a BS in Administration. At the University, he lettered in gymnastics and met his future wife, Mary Virginia. They married Dec. 27, 1941. John worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau prior to joining the Navy where he became Chief Aerographer and was described as “excellent, honest and faithful” by the General’s Office during WWII. John worked for 34 years as an Aviation Forecaster for the National Weather Service. He lived his Catholic faith and was an active volunteer for numerous parish programs for decades. He enjoyed the outdoors, poetry, music, and toured with the Heart of America Barbershop Chorus. John was a devoted family man, loving husband, and compassionate father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his legacy of spiritual mentoring, generosity, laughter and kindness.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia Hill. His extraordinary life of love will forever be cherished by his 6 children John Hill (Kathy), MaryAnn Haufler, Sally Miller (Craig), Jim Hill (Nancy), Michael Hill (Cindy) and Trish Rogers (Grant); 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Visitation to be held Fri., Oct. 7, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at McGilley Stateline Chapel. Funeral Mass to be held Sat., Oct. 8, 10:00 AM, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Graveside Memorial to be held Mon., Oct. 10, 12:30 PM, at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Davenport, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, Catholic Relief Services or City Union Mission.
