John Joseph Weiss, 90, Olathe, Kansas, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family. Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Jack was born March 19, 1926, in Teaneck, New Jersey. He grew up in upstate New York and was a World War II Navy Veteran.
Jack married the love of his life Marie Maggio Weiss in Cairo, New York on December 14, 1947. Jack and Marie have four children who all reside in the Kansas City area. His family was what Jack treasured most and he was a devoted and loving father. He was a steady presence in the life of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he always had his camera ready to capture the moments of his family’s life.
He was a devout Catholic, outdoor enthusiast, loyal sports fan, photographer, and he loved travel and adventure. He and Marie enjoyed their annual trips to Arizona, and he enjoyed fishing trips with his son and grandsons. Healthy and active nearly to the end, he celebrated his 70th birthday behind the wheel of a NASCAR race car, his 75th birthday by hiking in and out of the Grand Canyon and his 80th birthday by skydiving. He enjoyed our annual 4th of July family reunions at the lake and waterskied into his 80s.
Jack retired from The Coca-Cola Company as a National Account Manager, and he was well-known in the foodservice industry where he was respected as a man of integrity and honesty. He was a humble, unassuming and genuine gentleman. Jack will be best remembered for how he lifted the spirits of those who knew him – his family, colleagues, customers, and even perfect strangers. He treated everyone he encountered with deliberate thought, purpose, kindness and respect. It was no wonder that you found yourself at ease and instantly comforted by his radiant warmth and spirit.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Michael J. and Kathryn Weiss; sister Norma Bondy; and son-in-law Frank Fontana. Jack is survived by his wife, Marie M. Weiss and their four children, Stephen J. Weiss (Wife - Dr. Laura McMurray), Susan M. Highberger, Judy A. Weiss and Jennifer L. Fontana. “Papa Jack” was loved and adored by his 10 grandchildren Emily, Victor, Sammie, Frankki, Tony, Nikki, Michael, Kelley, Matthew, Roy, and he was blessed with 9 great-grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
