Jonathan Robert Mahony peacefully left us on October 28th, 2024. He bravely endured many diagnoses but succumbed to kidney failure following pulmonary hypertensions (2003) and stage four small cell lung cancer in his colon (2024). Jon was gifted with life in 2016 with a double lung transplant and enjoyed 8 years of breathing easy.
Jon attended Portsmouth Abbey in Rhode Island for high school and Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin for college. He met lifelong friends in high school and college. Most importantly, he met the love of his life in college, Elizabeth.
He began his career at Qualcomm in San Diego starting in facilities before transitioning to finance following college. With Elizabeth, he moved to Minneapolis to work with then Airtouch, now Verizon. He would go on to spend the bulk of his career at Verizon, where he met dear friends and colleagues and had a profound impact on all who had the chance to work with him.
Jon and Elizabeth were married May 24th, 1998 in a beautiful ceremony in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “The favorite day on my life”, Elizabeth happily describes. They lived in Minneapolis, Bloomington and Eden Prairie. Along the way, they welcomed three 3 wonderful children; Jack, Charlie and Abigail who were the joys of Jon’s life. Raising their kids on Schroers Farm Road were among their happiest days. In 2012, they moved to Overland Park, Kansas where they gratefully found a hockey and football community for Charlie and a lacrosse community for Jack who became life long friends. Jon and Elizabeth happily watched Abigail join a youth group at Resurrection and grow her faith and friendships who have become some of the Mahony family’s favorite people. From the field to the rink to the stage, at all phases of Jon’s journey he was always their biggest fan.
Jon will be remembered for his courage, kindness and strength of character. After his initial diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension, he was given 6 months to live and when he received the most recent diagnosis, doctors asked if he wanted to know his timeline, and he calmly responded “timelines are irrelevant”. All who knew Jon felt hopeful and motivated which stemmed from profound determination to live each day and be with his wife and watch his kids grow up. As a leader, as a friend, as a father and and as husband Jon Mahony was of the highest kind. Elizabeth and her college friends say “he was the best of the us” and we are all better for knowing him.
Jon is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Elizabeth and their three adored children Jack, Charlie and Abigail. He is also survived by his mother Katherine Adams, sister Bridget Aboel-nil, in laws David, Ada and Heather Alden, Samy Aboel-nil, his beloved nieces Alison, Hope, Ella and Clara and his bonus son Crosby Gassoway. In addition to his cousins, aunts and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his father Robert Hinds, grandparents Mary and John Mahony and his chosen brother Dominic Smith.
There will be a service on December 7, 2024 at 11 AM at Wesley Chapel 13720 Roe Ave. Leawood, KS 66224. At a later date he will return to the Pacific Ocean where he grew up with a paddle out and the Irish Wake he always wanted, details to follow.
