

Karen was born in Missouri and lived a life filled with faith, family and joy. She attended Christian College and the University of Missouri, where she earned her degree in education. She began her career as a teacher in St. Louis.
She married and had three children. Later on she met the love of her life David Avery. David and Karen created a loving blended family with his three children, as well as a whole slew of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Karen’s faith was the steady center for her life. She was deeply involved at Village Presbyterian Church, where she poured her heart into the preschool as its Director, and then later for the Singles Ministry. For countless families, she was a gentle presence who created a loving, nurturing place to learn, grow and mingle.
Karen had a passion for theater. She found her inner diva in Ballroom Dancing. She loved performing and was even given a one woman show at her studio. Whether she was on the dance floor or surrounded by family at home, Karen brought light, laughter and an incredible sense of humor. She had a smile that would light up every room she entered.
She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, faithful friend, and a woman whose life was a beautiful dance. She is survived by Brad (Vickie) Dawdy, Michelle (Tom) McCarthy, Matt Dawdy, Carol (John) Cowden, David (Suzan) Avery, and Diana Compton as well as all those grands mentioned earlier.
A service celebrating Karen’s life will be held on September 4, 2025 at 10:00 at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. All who knew her are invited to join the family in honoring her remarkable life. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service.
