Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Longview Chapel Christian Church, 850 SW Longview Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO. Visitation is at the church prior to the Celebration of Life from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Ken was born on April 29, 1933, on a farm outside Butler, Missouri. He was the youngest of four children. He had fond memories of beginning his education at the one-room Cornland School near their farm in Bates County MO. He graduated from Butler High School in 1951 and moved to Kansas City to begin his career.
In 1959, Ken met Patricia Kelley. They married in 1960 and raised their four children in their home in Raytown, MO that Ken, together with his father and father-in-law, helped build. He and his family lived there for almost 30 years.
Professionally, Ken began his career in accounting and joined the Western Auto corporate office in 1965. To provide for his growing family, Ken also founded Accurate Inventory Service, a grocery store inventory company he ran for nearly two decades. He retired from Western Auto in 1997 as Director of Real Estate.
A man of deep faith, Ken and Pat were longtime members of Faith Presbyterian Church, where he served as both Elder and Deacon. He enjoyed participating in church life, including the bowling league and men's softball team. He loved baseball—including spending countless hours playing catch with his children in the backyard (and replacing broken windows), coaching his daughters’ softball teams, and attending his youngest son’s baseball games. He was a devoted Kansas City Royals fan and shared season tickets for many years with his brother-in-law.
After 30 years of marriage, Pat passed away in 1990. He married Barbara Colvin in 1992, and they made their home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. They have been longtime members of Longview Chapel Christian Church, where he enjoyed serving as a Deacon and attending the Men’s Friday Breakfast Group. After their retirement, Ken and Barbara enjoyed traveling and made a special trip to Switzerland to visit towns where his ancestors lived. They also spent many hours playing cards with friends and family.
Ken became a Freemason in 1955 and was an active member of the Scottish Rite after his children grew older. He became a 32nd degree Mason in 1981. His dedication and service were recognized in 1995 when he was honored as a 33rd Degree Mason—a degree bestowed upon a select few for their significant contributions to Freemasonry and their communities. After his retirement from Western Auto, he continued his contribution to the organization he valued deeply by serving as the Executive Secretary of the Kansas City Area Scottish Rite from 2009 to 2013.
Ken is survived by his wife Barbara of Lee’s Summit, MO; his children: Kenna Kay Hyatt (Paul Geck) of Blue Lake, CA; Cheryl Olson (Bill) of Kansas City, MO; David Hyatt (Leah) of Leawood, KS; and Chris Hyatt (Valerie) of St. Louis, MO; his stepdaughter Michelle Colvin of Shawnee, KS (Gary Bryan); and five grandchildren: Madison, Matthew, Hadley, Jonathon, and Noah Hyatt. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia; his parents, Dora and Elizabeth Hyatt; his sisters Louise Hermann and Allyne Hyatt; and his brother, D. Hyatt.
The family would like to thank Meadowbrook Senior Living of Prairie Village and Ascend Hospice for the wonderful care and support they gave to Ken and his family.
Ken will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his joyful smile, his quiet strength, and his unwavering love for his family and community. His life was a testament to service, humility, and grace.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a gift to the Scottish Rite Children's Language Disorders Clinic (CLDC) in partnership with Children's Mercy Hospital, or the Longview Chapel Christian Church Memorial Fund.
