Born on June 19,1942, in Kansas City, Missouri, Larry was the son of William and Irene Walsh and the third of five children. He grew up in a lively household where he developed a curiosity for the world, a love of learning, and a quiet determination that shaped the course of his life.
Larry worked as a chemist for Bayer for 37 years, where his meticulous nature and passion for discovery left a lasting mark. After retiring, he pursued a second career that reflected his love of words: writing. Alongside his wife, Suella, he co-authored and published numerous books. The two also taught writing classes and mentored aspiring authors, offering guidance, encouragement, and careful edits to help others bring their stories to life.
Larry and Suella’s love story began in an unexpected moment—he first saw her while she was out on a date with one of his friends. Something about her stayed with him, and in time, that chance encounter led to a deep and lasting connection. On September 3, 1968, they eloped to Oklahoma City, beginning a lifelong journey marked by devotion, creativity, and shared purpose.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Larry found joy in life's everyday moments. He loved watching his daughters play sports, cheering on his grandchildren at their various activities, and especially looked forward to “Boys’ Night Out” with his grandsons. He took great pride in watching Morgan sing and Scout dance, always beaming with quiet admiration. His calm demeanor and genuine interest in the lives of those around him made everyone feel truly seen and valued.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Suella; his daughter, Heather Johntz, and her husband, John; and his son-in-law, Michael Plunkett; his grandchildren Thatcher Johntz (22), Landrum Johntz (19), Scout Johntz (10), Morgan Plunkett (24), and Jack Plunkett (21).
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Irene Walsh; his brothers, Tommy and Billy Walsh; his sister, Karyn Walsh; and his daughter, Laura Walsh Plunkett.
A private service will be held for the immediate family. Those who wish to share condolences, memories, or messages of support are welcome to contact Heather Johntz at [email protected].
Larry’s quiet strength, creative spirit, and generous heart will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
