Luis Enrique Angles, M.D., age 89, died peacefully on 2/9/2016 surrounded by his loving family at Kansas University Medical Center. Luis was born in Perico, Cuba, on October 3, 1926 to Luis and Elena Angles. He graduated from medical school at University of Havana in 1950. Following residency, he joined a small practice in Havana, where he would meet his future wife Gloria E. Yanez. They married November 6th, 1955.
After the Communist revolution, Luis and Gloria and their four children escaped Cuba in 1960 and settled in the United States.
The Angles Family located in Kansas City where Luis had to repeat much of his post-graduate medical training and tests to become licensed as a physician in the US. He learned the English language and adapted to a new culture. During this time, he also took a fifth child into his home, his nephew Pedro Irigonegaray.
A specialist in Internal Medicine, Luis cared for and was loved by thousands of patients throughout his 40 plus year career. He was on staff at both St. Joseph Hospital and Baptist Medical Center. He was respected by his colleagues, nurses, and hospital staff. "A true gentleman," in their words. Luis truly had a special gift. He could analyze and diagnose diseases with uncanny accuracy. His most accurate, and frequently most frustrating, recommended treatment program was "darle un par de semanas" (give it two weeks).
Luis was a devout Catholic. He and Gloria were daily communicants. He lived his Faith everywhere he went.
Luis was an avid tennis player into his mid-70's. He enjoyed most sports, especially watching the Royals, Chiefs, and KU Basketball. "Abuelo" loved Sunday afternoons when his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren would come to visit.
Luis was a strong believer in education. He strongly encouraged all of his children to pursue higher education. He worked diligently to support his family and insure an education was always possible.
Luis was predeceased by his parents and his two siblings Marcos Angles and Yoya Angles. He leaves his wife Gloria, and their 14 children, Elena Dailey (Steve); Louis (Susan); Gloria; Ignacio (Marybeth); Francisco (Kristin); Maria; Mark; Paul (Cynthia); Peter (Cristina); Rosemary Mangold (Thomas); Christopher; Lucy Larson (Douglas); William; and Margaret. Also 38 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The family is grateful for the care provided by Father John Fongemie, Father Justin Nolan, Father Joshua Curtis, Dr. Hegde, and all the nurses and staff at KU Medical Center.
