Mabel grew up in Olmsted, where she was the oldest of six children. In 1952, she met and married the love of her life, Phillip B. Lawson. The couple moved to Kansas City in 1959. Mabel had a diverse career, including employment at Russell Stover Chocolates. However, her true passion lay in retail sales, where she excelled with the Jones Store Company and Stix Baer and Fuller. Known for her impeccable fashion sense, Mabel was an avid shopper, always accessorized to perfection. In 1997, Mabel and Phil retired to Lake of the Ozarks, enjoying all the lake activities before eventually moving to Windsor, Mo. After her husband of more than 65 years had passed in 2017, Mabel moved to Primrose Retirement Community in Sedalia, Mo.
Mabel actively participated in various organizations throughout her life. She was a dedicated member of the P.E.O. of Windsor and the Order of the Eastern Star for over fifty years, serving as secretary and treasurer. Additionally, she was part of the "red hat club", performed as a "Senior Swiftie Swag Cheerleader" for the Chief's Super Bowl, and served as a resident ambassador at the Primrose Retirement Community. Mabel was also a devout member of the Windsor United Methodist Church. Her interests included shopping, oil painting, and creating cherished memories with her family- especially her grandchildren and sister, Shirley.
Survivors include her son, Phil Lawson (Janece) of Leawood, KS, and five grandchildren: Lauren (Richard) of Nashville, Trey (Kristina) of Scottsdale, Matt, and Sarah of Kansas City, and Doug (Darlene) of Gurnee, IL. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Braun of Perkinston, MS. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Phil, and siblings Gloria, Jim, Kenneth, and Ron.
A private funeral service will be held at Floral Hills Cemetery in Raytown, Mo., on Friday, May 31. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Heart Association.
