Marcella Louise Zerr was born August 6, 1940 as oldest of 7 siblings to Anna Mary and Anton Clem (Tony) Zerr in Denver, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Eldon Anthony Zerr, Jerald Lee Zerr, Anton Clem (Buddy) Zerr and sister, Mary Ann Sharpley. She is survived by her loving life partner of 46 years, Tamara Ewing; brother, Kris (Kay) Zerr of Denver CO; sister, Linda Sue Hillis of Dallas TX, sister-in-law, Deanna (Eldon), brother-in-law, Harvey Sharpley (Mary Ann); cousins, nephews and nieces; many close and loving friends in the Kansas City area with whom she shared playing games, celebrating holidays and meals, cheering for the Chiefs and Royals, traveling for vacations, water aerobics at the Y, talking with friends in the neighborhood and working with the Red Bridge Food Pantry.
Marcella had an energetic and full life lovingly dedicated to her family, friends, service and her pets. Upon high school graduation she entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) where, as Sister Marie Anton, she taught in many SCL elementary and middle schools for 18 years. She also earned a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and Elementary Education from then Saint Mary College during that time.
In 1976, she left the SCL Community but continued to teach in SCL schools for 10 years. In 1982, she was nominated for and chosen as a Miriam Joseph Farrell National Outstanding Educator Award. With the help and encouragement of good friends she earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Emporia State University in 1987. She then taught gifted students primarily in the Olathe School District for 25 years.
Marcella spent her retirement years doing the things she loved most – spending time with family and friends, decorating her home, gardening, enjoying water aerobics with friends at the Y, visiting with her neighbors, volunteering with the Red Bridge Food Pantry and spoiling her puppies.
Visitation will be held on from 2:00-3:30pm followed by a Memorial Service at 3:30 on Thursday, November 3rd in McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
