Margaret Meyer, age 85, passed away April 18, 2011 at Manor Care of Overland Park, Kansas from complications during the final stage of Alzheimer's. A Celebration of her Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday April 25, 2011 at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 95th & Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Mo. She was born in Breckenridge, MO and moved to Kansas City as a teenager, graduating from Westport High School. There she was known as "Mickey". After graduation she worked as a secretary for the K.C. Public Transit. She met her future 6'4" blue-eyed husband, Wally, at church one evening during a singles dinner. They both went with other dates, but somehow Wally ended up taking her home. She introduced him to her mother and after he left Margaret said "I'm going to marry that man." Her mother replied "Oh no, he's much too tall!" They were married in June, 1947. Wally was in advertising sales which moved them to Chicago where their first daughter was born. Shortly thereafter they relocated to Long Island, N.Y. where three more daughters were born over the next 12 years. Wally traveled a great deal ultimately taking a position as Manager of the Kansas City Star office in New York City. In 1962 they moved back to Kansas City when Wally was promoted to Director of Advertising and Vice President of the Kansas City Star Newspaper. Wally and Margaret enjoyed traveling to many countries around the world and they also became involved with People to People, hosting visitors from over 20 countries. Throughout their lives the two were devout Christians, very involved with their church. They were without a doubt the best parents and grandparents anyone could hope for. It was a busy time raising four daughters, yet Margaret managed to get involved in many activities. She was a strong bowler on the Red Bridge Team, a great tennis player, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and she taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She also worked with handicapped adults for 15 years and volunteered with the Marillac Center where she worked in the Children's Store. Margaret is best known for her generosity and time spent helping others. Many of them still refer to her as their "angel". Margaret Meyer had so many memorable qualities and talents. She had a beautiful smile and laugh, a vivacious personality and was a wonderful cook, seamstress and poet. Those who knew her best considered her to be a perfectionist who was energetic, witty, creative, giving, loving and a great friend. She is survived by her four daughters: Karen Bridges of Overland Park (daughters Jessica Bridges and Julie Bardelmeier (husband Michael); Janice Potter of Overland Park (husband Brad); Marilyn Stotts of Louisburg (husband Ted and sons Adam, Ryan and Brett); Linda Parrish of Lenexa (husband Larry and daughter Angela) and her brother Patrick Emery of New York (wife Kathy and son John.) In her memory, contributions to Alzheimer's Association , 3846 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208 or Heartland Hospice, 1001 E. 101st Terr. Suite 180, K.C., MO 64131 would be welcomed.
