

Marjorie Ellen Crow passed away July 31, 2017. Ellen was born November 3, 1924 to Frank and Ethel Powell in Kendallville, Indiana. The youngest daughter, she joined siblings Laura Mai, Frank, Glynn, David and Lloyd. The family soon moved to Rector, Arkansas where Ellen attended school, graduating Salutatorian of her high school class. On November 8, 1942 she married Robert W. Crow and the young couple moved to Pierre, South Dakota where Robert continued to work with the Federal Aviation Agency. They eventually moved to the Kansas City area settling in Raytown, Missouri. They raised three children: Connie, Steven and Roxane.
Ellen was an attentive and involved mother in her children’s lives. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a Job’s Daughters’ parent, and support roles in various organizations to which her children belonged, as well as providing auxiliary assistance to Robert’s involvement in the International Organization of Free Masons. Together they participated and served as officers in the Order of Eastern Star.
An excellent seamstress, Ellen frequently sewed designer clothes for herself and her children. She soon gained a following and created clothing for various clients. Later, her skills with the crochet hook would provide hundreds of newborns with baby afghan blankets.
In her early forties, Ellen began work at Rycom Instruments as an electronics specialist. She built strong friendships and proved an outstanding employee receiving several recognitions during her 25 year career.
During retirement, Ellen enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, participating in line dancing and exercise classes. She joined Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was twice selected Woman of the Year.
Ellen was preceded in death by her loving husband Robert, her parents and siblings. She is survived by her children: Connie (Jeff Miller), Steven and Roxane (Diane Hersh); grandchildren Colby and Blake Weathers, Jennifer Poland, Sarah Freund and Chris Crow; and great-grandchildren Wiley Poland, Avery, Zachary and Victoria Freund, and Callan Weathers.
A celebration of life will be held 1:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 31, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial to follow in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
