Marvin Wilson Walker

Marvin Wilson Walker, 92, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away March 31, 2023 with family by his side. Marvin was born on May 20, 1930 in Tennessee to M. H. Walker and Helen Gertrude Wilson Walker. He had three brothers and two sisters.

After graduating from high school, Marvin enlisted in the Navy in 1948 where he served for more than seven years. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Strong during the Korean conflict.

He met the love of his life Frances Lillian Rodgers in Kansas City. They married in May of 1952 in Hickman Mills, MO. To this union was born a daughter, Sherri Lynn, and a son, James (Jim) Henry.

Marvin worked for Western Auto as a mechanic and then Mobile Gas, General Electric repairing air conditioning units. He then worked at Armco Sheffield Steel in Kansas City, MO for many years until he retired. He was a life member of the United Steel Workers Union.

Marvin and Frances were avid square dancers and members of several square dance clubs. He helped build the square dance stage in Marvel Cave in Silver Dollar City.

The thing Marvin was most proud of was their home that he and Frances built in three phases from scratch on land purchased from Frances’ parents, land that is on the Three Trails (Santa Fe Trail, Oregon Trail, and California Trail) that passed through Grandview, MO. They never took out a mortgage; they built everything on a cash and carry basis. They raised cattle. They had ponies and horses and sheep as pets for Sherri and Jim.

Marvin could carry on meaningful conversations with people of all walks of life and never knew a stranger.

Marvin and Frances enjoyed entertaining their friends, spending holidays with family – especially the three grandchildren. He enjoyed photography, birding, and rock collecting - his favorite rocks being geodes and amethysts. They treasured their three grandchildren, supporting Chris’ and Ashley’s activities (baseball, softball, gymnastics, and dance) and frequently visited their granddaughter Amy in Oklahoma.

He was a member of Pointe of Hope Lutheran Church in Blue Springs, MO.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Frances, his father M.H. and mother Helen, his three brothers Thomas, Jack, and Jim, his two sisters Mary Elizabeth and Anna Ruth. He is survived by daughter Sherri, son Jim (Diana), and three grandchildren Christopher James Kelley, Ashley Nicole Kelley, and Amy Frances Walker, and one great grandson Kolton Walker James.

A Visitation for Marvin will begin at 9:00 AM at Floral Hills Funeral Home (7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133). The Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a Graveside Service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery (7601 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, MO 64138). A reception will be held at 12:00 PM at Los Compas (9055 E State Rte 350, Raytown, MO 64133)
