Mary C. Reutter

Mary C. Reutter, 89, of Kansas City, MO passed away peacefully in her home on February 27, 2015. Mary leaves her husband of 65 years, George of the home; nine children, Margaret Hopkins (John), Mary Snow (Doyle), Betti Kalahurka (Bill), Cathy Novogoratz (David), Martha Phillips (Terry), Janice Greene (David), John Reutter (Carmen) Thom Reutter and Patty DeRubertis (Pat); sibglings Ruth Simpson, Rosie Jo Burns, Anna Mildred Sheffer, John Van DeVyvere and Margaret Gouger; 28 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Mary was born August 18, 1925 Richard C. and Mary Clara (Kurzweil) Van De Vyvere in Grandview, MO. She graduated from Lees’ Summit High School in 1947. She married George September 3, 1949. While raising her family, Mary was involved with Guardian Angels PTA, she was president of Greater KC Twins Mothers Club in 1961; organized health room volunteers for Guardian Angels School in 1960. Very active in the life of the church, Mary was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society over 60 years, the St. Gabriel’s Circle since 1965, organized neighborhood and church garage sales and started the Guardian Angels Quilting group 31 years ago, as well as making candles for 18 years. In 1974, Mary went to LPN school at Lakeside Hospital and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital from 1974 to 1985 and was a Red Cross volunteer at St. Mary’s. She loved to go bowling.

Mary was an accomplished seamstress, making school uniforms, bridesmaid dresses and numerous other clothing pieces. She inspired her children to volunteer service. Annually, she canned food for her large family. A gifted baker and chef, Mary enjoyed giving baked goods as gifts to her family and friends. In retirement, Mary and George enjoyed traveling, compiling genealogical information for the family. Mary and George celebrated 65 years together with a Mass and dinner party last fall.
