Mary was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Suzanne and James Estabrook. Being the 2nd oldest of 5 children, Mary quickly took on the big sister role to her siblings, Steve, Jimmy, Elaine and Annie.
The Estabrook family moved to the west side of Kansas City, MO in 1956. Mary attended Southwest High School and graduated in 1974. After high school, she had an array of different jobs throughout Kansas City, including bartending the Tuba and the Point. This is where she was known as the best bartender in town! Mary took great pride in her mixed drinks and one liners, which lead to her loyal following of regular customers turned friends that stayed with Mary throughout her career.
In 1997, Suzi’s casual dining opened and that is where Mary was able to shine in her spotlight! Suzi’s hosted some of Kansas City’s greatest artists, such as Ida McBeth, Tom Hall, Steve and Tracey, and Greg Camp. This is where she met the love of her life, Billy Shugrue. Billy and Mary were quickly married in 2003 and spent 20 wonderful years together.
One of Mary’s greatest accomplishments was reconnecting with her daughter Beth. These were the greatest years of her life spending time and getting to know her and her beautiful family. Their connection was undeniable from the moment they met until Mary’s last breath. Her life would never have been complete without this reunion.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Suzanne Asjes, her father, James Estabrook, brother Steve Estabrook and sister Annie Estabrook and of course, her love, Billy Shugrue. Mary has gone home to be with her Lord and the family that awaits her there.
