Born on May 13, 1933, in Independence, Missouri, MaryJane was the daughter of Charlie David Simpson and Danese O’Connell Simpson. She was a beloved sister to LaVerna and Donna, and family remained her greatest priority throughout her life.
In the mid-1950s, MaryJane began her career at Harzfeld’s, working as an assistant buyer in the Petticoat Lane Dress Shop. There, she met the love of her life, John A. Krugh, during a shared lunch at Wolferman’s. They were married on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1959.
Together, MaryJane and John raised three sons: Eric (Leigh) Krugh, Adam Krugh, and Alexander Krugh. She was a devoted grandmother to Caitlin (Patrick), Eric Jr., Joseph, Anna (Stephen), Johnny (Autumn), Christopher, Kevin, Evan, and Luke, and a cherished great-grandmother to James, Connor, Olivia, and William.
MaryJane was a natural artist who found joy in painting and creativity. She loved the daily newspaper crossword puzzle and was an accomplished gardener, taking great pride in her beautiful gardens. Summers spent at Crystal Lake, Michigan, held a special place in her heart.
MaryJane and John were longtime members of the Carriage Club, where they enjoyed time with friends. They loved traveling together, especially to Kauai, Hawaii. MaryJane volunteered for many years with St. Luke’s Heart Institute, served as a devoted Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop 66, and was a proud member of the Kansas City Young Matrons for over 50 years. She was also a longtime member of the Crystal Lake Watershed Association and shared her passion for art as a docent at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Known affectionately as “Grana,” she was known for her thoughtfulness and personal touch. A lover of handwritten cards and notes, she never missed a birthday or holiday—family and friends could always count on receiving a card from Grana in the mail. She made holidays truly special, hosting dinners and celebrations that brought loved ones together and created lasting traditions.
Grana will be remembered for her gentle spirit, sharp wit, and the warmth with which she welcomed everyone into her home and heart. Her kindness, generosity, and love leave an enduring legacy.
Grana will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends.
