

Mike Sandella, 97 of Kansas City, MO passed away September 9, 2014. Visitation from 6pm to 8pm Mon., September 15th at McGilley & Sheil Chapel; rosary will be said at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9am on Tues., September 16th at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, 9020 E. 51st Terr., KCMO. Burial at 1:30pm in Park Cemetery, Columbus, KS.
Dad was born May 17, 1917 in Cherokee County, KS to Santo & Filomenia Sandella. He attended school in Columbus, KS and graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in 1936. Dad selflessly volunteered to go in place of his brother when he was drafted into World War II. Dad was a Corporal with the 850th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Army Air Corps. On September 12, 1947 he married Irma Stauffer at St. Bridget Church in Scammon, KS. Dad was a pipefitter in construction & in 1966 continued his career at General Motors in Leeds. Even at 97, Dad remained active & social with many interests including; gardening, playing cards & especially dancing. Driving to his morning coffee group, his lunch group & attended mass at St. Bernadette’s. He was a strong Union man & attended monthly luncheons for UAW Retirees.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Irma; his parents, Santo & Filomenia Sandella; 3 brothers & 2 sisters. He is survived by his sister, Betty McBride; daughters, Marla Spriggs & Denise Hixson (David); son, Michael Sandella (Judy); grandchildren, Chris Spriggs, Jessica Hixson & Alison Waldren and 7 great grandchildren. Dad had great strength, integrity & above all loved his family. Dad will be greatly missed by family, friends & all who knew him.
