Norma Mitchell, 95, died peacefully on July 3, 2018 at Claridge Court Health Center. A visitation will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church, Prairie Village, KS at 9:30 AM on Monday, July 16 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
Norma was born to Harry Lieber and Bernice Claxton in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She attended St. John’s Catholic School, Wahpeton High School, and the North Dakota State College of Science. Norma careered with the Navy Department in Detroit, MI before moving to Washington, D.C. where she worked with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS, predecessor of the CIA). Norma married Eugene P. Mitchell on June 26, 1948 and celebrated 50 years of marriage before his death in 1999.
Norma believed in service and was actively involved in her community. She was the founding President of the St. Joseph Health Center Foundation, worked on the St. Joseph Hospital Advisory Board, and is a lifetime member of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. Norma was a member of the Ladies of Charity and was involved with the Friends of Art, St. Ann School, Belinder School PTA, Bishop Miege School Board, Rockhurst High School and St. Teresa Academy. Norma moved to Claridge Court in 2003 and became active in service committees and community activities.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene P. Mitchell; brother, Captain James C. Lieber, USN; and sister, Mary Frances Ebersviller. “Norrie” will always be remembered by her 8 children and families: Pat (Vicki), Jim, Mike (Kathleen), Tom, Ann Hoffman (John), Madge Schmank (Jim), Nonie Newman (Bill) and Molly Mitchell Danciger (Gary); 18 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
The Mitchell family is grateful for the care provided by the staff at the Claridge Court Health Center and Catholic Community Hospice—Catholic Charities of North East Kansas.
