After graduating from Climax Spring High School in 1957, she moved to Kansas City and began working at a bank. One highlight from working there was getting to meet Harry S. Truman, whose brother owned the bank. During this time, she began attending the Kansas City Baptist Temple. She sang in the choir, and served where she could. One Sunday, a gentleman who was attending there happened to see Phyllis singing in the choir, and he decided she was the one for him. On October 7, 1961, she married Alva Dennis Eason, and began serving the Lord with him. Over the years, they helped start 2 churches, and served in many others. Al and Phyllis wanted children, and finally after 15 years, they were blessed with a daughter, Rachel.
Phyllis worked for many years at the Christian Book and Gift Store in Olathe, KS, and later at Mardel in Overland Park, KS. She made many life-long friends, and purchased MANY books there—as reading brought her much joy. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, and doing other crafts. She loved spending time with her family as well, and many times opened her home for family members to live with us when they needed somewhere to stay. But above all, she loved Jesus and loved attending and serving at church.
Phyllis was welcomed to the arms of her Savior on September 30, 2025, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Al, one unborn child, and brother Shelton Duckworth. She is survived by her brother Preston Duckworth; her sisters Margaret (Vernon) and Joyce (Alvin); daughter Rachel (Eason) Luckel, and son-in-law Shelby Luckel; four grandchildren Jon, Nelson (Kat), Dayana, and Stefany, as well as many nieces and nephews, and numerous other family and friends.
The family asks that any flowers be in the form of potted plants or trees as Phyllis did not like cut flowers, and always wanted plants that could be nurtured and provide beauty in the coming years. These will be lovingly planted on Rachel and Shelby’s property in her memory. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Phyllis’ honor to the missions fund at Southland Baptist Church.
