

Richard Ludwig Gierster, 90, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Katherine Maggio Gierster, and his son, Michael Richard Gierster. He is the son of Martin and Phila Culverhouse Gierster. He is survived by his daughter, Tina G. Hintz and son-in-law Warren Hintz, sister Roberta G. Shrewsbury, daughter-in-law Mara B. Gierster, and four grandchildren, Megan, Nick, Andrew and Ashley. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Juanita Podraza, Peggy Maggio, and brother-in-law George Maggio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a special niece, Debbie Penniston.
Richard was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He served in the United States Marine Corps in the Air Corps as a radioman/gunner. He most recently traveled to Washington, D.C. as a member of the Heartland Honor Flight. Richard was a member of the Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base Council, a charter member of St. Thomas More Parish where he served as Scoutmaster, and worked for Kansas City Power and Light Co.
Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes Rd., KCMO 64131. A Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to St. Thomas More Parish or Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care, 10100 W 87th St, Overland Park, KS 66212.
