Richard John Habiger, of O’Fallon, MO, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of the late Martha “Marty” Habiger; cherished son of the late Albert and Katherine Habiger; devoted father of Christine (Joseph) Mayer, Timothy Habiger, Brian (Lisa) Habiger, Monica (Greg) Ehlers, and Kathleen Jakobsen; loving grandfather of Ben; Hannah, Justin (Ciara), Katherine, Rebecca, Megan, Patrick, Danielle, and Conor; treasured great grandfather of Scarlett and Callan; dear brother of Al (Cathie) Habiger and the late Liz (Don) Tattershall; loved by many friends.
Richard proudly and honorably served in the Army Reserves and was a devoted member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys as well as the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He also regularly participated in Alzheimer’s Association Walks and longtime member of Marriage Encounter, showing his dedication to causes close to his heart. Richard was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Richard was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Carbondale, IL, an Eagle Scout, and a graduate of Rockhurst University who went on to earn his law degree, receiving his Juris Doctor from University of Missouri Kansas City. For a time, he worked at Saint Louis University Law School. He helped launch and worked at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Law School's legal clinic. He then went on to open his own practice, Habiger and Associates Elder Law Office, from which he eventually retired. He also enjoyed traveling, especially visiting national parks.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Richard's name the Alzheimer’s Association or Tunnel to Towers Foundation
Visitation will be held at St. Peter's Parish, 701 E Meyer Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64131, on September 13, 2025, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.
The funeral service will take place at St. Peter's Parish, 701 E Meyer Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64131, on September 13, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
The graveside service will be conducted at Mt Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, MO 64138, on September 13, 2025, from 11:15 am to 11:30 am.
