

He was born on February 4, 1945, in Trenton, Missouri, and soon after, he made Kansas City his lifelong home. In his youth, Dick found not only his faith but also his life partner, Carolyn, during bible study at Central Presbyterian Church. Their bond grew stronger over the years, culminating in a union celebrated on May 28, 1967. Together, they embarked on a journey that took them to Germany and then faced the challenges of deployment to Vietnam, where Dick served honorably as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army.
Upon returning home, Dick and Carol built a loving family, raising two sons, Rick (Megan) and Dave (Amanda). Their family expanded further with the arrival of three cherished grandchildren: Addie, Libby, and Raimee.
Dick was not only a devoted family man but also a respected figure in the business community of Kansas City. Later in life, he and Carol ventured to Warsaw, where they purchased The Captains Club Bar and Grill. There, they created a warm and welcoming space that became a beloved hub of the community.
Dick's commitment to service extended beyond his business endeavors. He served as a Commander of the American Legion Post #217, Warsaw, MO and held the esteemed position of District Commander. Through his involvement, he formed lifelong friendships and made lasting contributions to the welfare of veterans and their families.
In 2019, Dick faced the profound loss of his beloved Carol. Despite the heartache, he remained resilient and returned to Kansas City to be closer to his family.
A man of varied interests, Dick found joy in cheering on his beloved Mizzou Tigers, as well as the Chiefs and Royals. He was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, spending many Sundays engrossed in the excitement of the races.
Dick Sanford will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his country. His kindness, warmth, and infectious laughter touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. While he may be gone from our sight, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
A Funeral Service for Richard will be held Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131. Burial with full military honors will occur at 12:00 PM on Friday, February 23rd at Higginsville Veterans Cemetery, 20109 Bus MO-13, Higginsville, MO 64037.
