Robert Wayne “Bobby C” Contreras, son of proud parents John Joseph Contreras and Josephine Delfina Perez, was born February 1, 1953 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Franklin Grade School and went on to Lillis High School, where he proudly represented the Fighting Irish on their basketball and football teams.
An avid sports fan, Bobby had a great love for many teams, but his favorite of all time was the Oakland Raiders. With a closet full of Raiders gear ranging from jackets, to t-shirts, and many hats, Bobby could often be spotted in them - even at the KC Chiefs games!
Bobby generously shared his love for music and Mexican heritage with the community - known to many as “DJ Bobby C”- he played a wide range of music such as Tejano, Oldies, Motown, Funk and R&B. On many weekends, Bobby could be found spinning CDs or vinyls, laughing and smiling as the whole room danced to his curated playlist. Since 2013, Bobby served on the board of directors at Fiesta Hispana - whose mission is to promote cultural, educational and economic advancement of the Hispanic Community - where he volunteered countless hours and worked to attract some of the most renowned Tejano artists to Kansas City. For over 30 years, Bobby brought joy to the community through his music.
In 2014, Bobby retired from Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) after a 34-year career. During that time he was a proud Union member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1464. Prior to KCP&L, Bobby worked at Armco Steel for 12 years as a member of United Steelworkers Local 13.
Above all, Bobby’s greatest love was his family. He was a proud father and grandfather, making sure to attend all of his grandsons’ ball games and delighted to spend time with his young granddaughter. Bobby would often show up unannounced, tamales and sweets in hand, just to sit and spend time with his grand-babies. Bobby loved both of his children and three grandchildren with all of his heart. He kept every photo, memoir, recital program, event tickets to remember those special family moments.
At 11:55 am on November 29th, 2020, Bobby Contreras, 67, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital after a fight against lung disease.
Bobby made friends wherever he went. He had a unique ability make you laugh or smile, even during difficult times. We will miss him everyday.
Bobby is survived by his two children, R. Patrick Contreras (Michelle) and Jessica Miller (Joe), three grandchildren, Joseph, Jackson, and Jada Miller, his brother, John Jr Contreras, his sister, Linda Becerra, one niece, and two nephews, all of whom reside in Kansas City. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and nephew John Damien Becerra.
